Note taking application

I just got a new spiffy n800, a linux-based handheld. It has a nicely sized touchscreen, and I think I'd like to use it to take notes in my university classes. I'm envisioning a program that lets me write notes on my n800. Not type notes, but write them. The keyboard is far too slow for taking notes. And I do realize it has handwriting recognition, but I'm a mathematics major, and handwriting recognition just can't handle mathematical notation.

I just want to write with the stylus and have my text appear, not interpreted in any way. Think a very paint-style application. There are some paint apps for the n800, but they all work on fixed-size images. I want a "scroll" that grows as I take notes.

I've started to write my own, but I realized that there has to be an easier way. So my question is twofold: 1) Has this application been done before. 2) Is there a pre-existed (Gtk) paint-style canvas widget that I could just mod?

Many thanks.
