Not adding accents in OpenOffice with GNOME

When I'm using OpenOffice Writer, I can't write accents (e.g. árbol), but it rather writes something like "´arbol".

This only happens when I'm logged in as this user (not if I run OpenOffice as root), and using GNOME. (Accents are correctly displayed in OpenOffice when I'm logged in as this user using KDE).

In GNOME, I can use accents normally in other programs, such as gedit...

I am not sure if it is something related to OpenOffice or GNOME, but I would like to know what I should try to get the accents working. Thank you for your time reading this
