I have recently switched to Linux from windows and am not used to commands etc. Ive been doing reading up on them, but I still dont know how to install properly! I just downloaded GTK-Gnutella and its place is file:/home/.../Documents/Gtk ... thats the folder, it tells me to go into SU and
____________________________________________________
To compile gtk-gnutella:
Configure
make
make install
____________________________________________________
... what would the commands in SU be to do this?
If anyone could help me that would be great, otherwise a lot more reading for me :P
Thx,
crab_2004
p.s. - and if their is anything else that I have to do afterwards or anything that might be troubling, mind helping me out on that too?? :P
those are the commands to use. the only command you need root priveledges is the make install command.
i don't use gtk-gnutella, so i'm not sure, but i think the first command is "./configure" with no quotes.
so basically if you the extracted folder from the tarball is called gtk-gnutella and that folder is in /home/user (where your user name is user) do this in this order in a shell terminal:
1. cd
2. cd gtk-gnutella
3. ./configure
4. make
5. su -
6. make install
#1 is only if you're in some other folder. the cd command by itself will take you to your home directory (in the example above, /home/user).
megaspaz... If I go into root, would I actually just type
cd
cd gtk-gnutella
etc
would their be no path?
(file:/home/josh/Documents/Gtk/cd)
anything like that?
okay. your home directory is /home/josh. if the gtk-gnutella folder was in /home/josh/ then no, you don't need the path after typing the first cd by itself. plus there's no reason to su into root right away until your ready to "make install".
once again, as a regular user, josh....
1. cd
2a. cd gtk-gnutella (if it is in /home/josh/)
or
2b. cd Documents/gtk-gnutella ( this denotes that gtk-gnutella is in /home/josh/Documents/gtk-gnutella)
Sorry to once again be a nuasance, but i've gone into konsole(none SU yet) and did 2b., everything worked until ./configure..
this is exactly what it told me -
[josh@localhost Gtk]$ ./configure
bash: ./configure: No such file or directory
