Non X-based remote desktop tool

I'm trying to set up a remote desktop tool on a linux machine which has no X-server installed. I thought vnc-server doesn't need X to work, but it does. Is there an other tool (or way) for non X systems to be controlled remotely?

Most of those remote desktop type servers will require X.org or XFree86 to be install since the X system is based on sending signals over a network.

If i understand you right, are you trying to say the core of network communication in Linux is X and that it's absence means, it is impossible to run network based apps? If so, i don't agree with you, then all kind of network services (ftp-server, apache,...) wouldn't work on "X-less" systems, but they do. So i can't see a reason why X absence would make vnc-like communication impossible.

Run SSHd on the PC you want to remote login to, and then use an ssh client to log into it.

Then learn how to use screen, and your life will be complete.

No, not networking apps at all, rather remote desktop applications which depend on the X framework from the getgo. See, what I'm trying to say is that X was designed and intended to be used within a network computing framework (yes, even locally), and the whole term "network computing" simply means using a gui over a network connection in this case. At anyrate, you need to have some form of a valid X server running if you want to run these remote desktop apps.
