I'm running Slackware 10.1 with the kernal that came with it, 2.4.29 (IIRC). I'm running KDE 3.3 (what was on the ISO), which plays sound just fine for KDE 3.3 stuff, like opening and closing windows, minimizing stuff, etc. However, nothing else has sound. I tried running a few of the media players opening random crap, and no sound plays. I can't hear sound through flash (Flash Player 7, just downloaded and configured) apps in Firefox 1.0.4, using homestarrunner as my test site. But KDE 3.3 still plays sounds for itself just fine. Does anyone have any idea what's going on? Anyone know how to fix this?
it's always a good idea to give hardware description...
if you're using alsa you could try alsaconf as root and see if it finds your card, then adjust volumes with alsamixer...
I'm using the onboard sound on my Asus A7V333 motherboard. I don't know much about it, because I never got drivers for it when I had Windows. According to Asus, it's an "Optional C-Media CMI8738 6-Channel audio controller". Is there any other way to get the chipset? I really don't know how to provide anymore information than that. I can't seem to find anything about sound in xorg.conf or rc.modules either... KDE 3.3 sound still works! I still don't know what's going on.
Like slackmartian suggested, try running alsaconf
If Alsa is not installed, I suggest you compile your own kernel with Alsa support in it.
You'll also need the alsa-packages from your slackware cd.
I'm running a C-media similar to yours on KDE right now (in slack)
Try using a mixer first, such as Kmenu>multimedia>kmix. See if your levels are up and enabled. If those are already set properly try changing the amount of time KDE hogs the sound server. It is in Kmenu>control center>sound and multimedia>sound server. At the bottom there's an autosuspend time parameter and some tests. (sometimes changing this crashes my comp) If those don't work the guys are right. It's most likely kernel level stuff.
NOTE: I have had problems playing stuff off cd's (straight up .cda) but when I ripped them using Grip, it didn't have a problem playing .wav or .ogg.
If alsa isn't automatically set up like mine was go to the terminal and type "alsaconf" if that doesn't get you anywhere, sorry. I have shared all of my sound mishap knowledge that I can think of.
Ok, I ran alsaconf, and it seemed to fix it for the most part. I checked a few music files and movie clips I downloaded, and they all work fine. However, I can't seem to get sound in Flash (the newest version, 7 something) to work in Firefox 1.0.4. I checked newgrounds and homestarrunner, and I get absolutely no sound from them. I have nothing else running that's accessing sound. And yet again, everything else works just fine with the sound. The versions of Konqueror and Mozilla that came with Slackware 10.1 also don't get any sound from flash. Do I need to set permissions or something...? I really have no idea what's going on here...
I installed mozilla firefox from mozilla.com (1.0.4) or whatever and went to homestarrunner.com. Mozilla prompted me to install the flash plugin and after a few clicks, did it automatically. If you installed these programs some other way, it might be a good idea to detail them to us, or just reinstall mozilla, then wait for it to ask you for the plugin. Happy hunting, hope you get sound running.
I downloaded the installer from the Macromedia website, closed all open browser windows, then ran the installer and pointed it to my firefox directory (/home/firefox). I didn't have sound working at the time. Can I just reinstall flash? If so, how?
Get rid of flash or firefox and reinstall them. Once you install firefox, go to a flash web page. It will prompt you to have it installed automatically. try this, otherwise, I dunno.
Yes, I understand the getting rid of part, but I'd like to know *how*. Is there a flash uninstaller? Is there an uninstaller for firefox? Where? Or is it safe to just delete /home/firefox?
I'm not really educated on uninstalling, but starting over somehow is normally how i fix things in slack. If it doesn't work in slack its always my fault.
Ok, I tried deleting the flash stuff in the plugin directory, and then reinstalling it. That didn't work. I then tried deleting the firefox directory, /home/firefox and reinstalling it. That didn't work either. In fact, it kept all the plugins and settings, etc. So... that stuff must be stored elsewhere. So what do I do now?
take a look in the /usr/lib/firefox directory and see if something is there.
otherwise try to search for "firefox" in Find Files/Folders (in the KDE menu). it should display all folders where something is stored of firefox.
Alternatively, firefox is also supplied as a package from slackware. You can download it from slackware.com -> Packages. I suppose all the settings will be right then...
I forgot to mention subdirectories and everything, oftentimes when installing in linux, stuff is everywhere!!! (I mean everywhere) Just try installing one of those things where they want you to copy all of the directories. Anywho, thx, patrick
