non-KDE apps hang 5 or 6 seconds as they close

I run Fedora Core 4 and use KDE as my desktop.

FYI, rpm -q kdebase responds
kdebase-3.5.1-0.3.fc4

I have noticed that when closing certain non-KDE apps, e.g. firefox or MyPasswordSafe, that the app hangs for 5 or 6 seconds as it closes. This does not happen all the time, though typically it does happen if I use the app for any significant amount of time.

I know that it hangs because I have my panel clock set to show seconds and it stops updating for those 5 or 6 seconds and then catches up. As you might expect, nothing much else works during this time.

I've done a number of searches looking for someone else who might have a similar problem. It's not easy to search for and I haven't had any luck.

Anyone have any ideas?
