no sound when playing avi + wmv's

I went and downloaded the win32 codecs for xine and am finally able to play all of my wmv's and avi files, but now I can't get the sound to play when I'm playing those files! I couldn't hear sound on the avi's that I could play before, so I know it's not a video codec problem with one of the win32 codecs, I think I just need the right codecs installed for sound but have no idea what they are..

Does anyone know how to find what codec a video file is using, or maybe a site with audio codecs to download?

I went to that site and looked at some of the files, and then got them using swaret --install pkg. using slack 9.1 and the installs went fine but I don't think any of them have helped. :\

I think I have the same problem.

Sometimes I get choppy sound and few lines of code on the shell saying:

'fixing soundcard drift (digits)'

Would love to share a solution with you FLOODS.

Onboard sound...never trust it with your life.

Try buying a sound card like Sound Blaster if possible. While there is some support for onboard sound...it usually isn't pretty. I should know; I've used four different versions of linux and onboard sound support wasn't great. Then again...it didn't help that I had onboard sound by via...

For the time I have no options but to use onboard sound, but I don't think that's what's the matter here. I am using a VIA chipset, too.

I'm going to buy a SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 card when I get $30 sometime soon..

Anyways, I'm coming to think it's a codec I need maybe.. I can hear sound on some avi and wmv files, but on most I can't.

I did install the win32codecs.tar.bz2 and that allows me to play the video portion now, though.
