no sound only in vlc player

Hey,

ive got no sound when i play anything in VLC. It is only with VLC as far as i know, which leads me to believe that its not a problem with my audio set-up.

I have tried, uninstalling and reinstalling the pulse audio plug-ins as well as VLC player itself. I have tried using all the different sound set-ups on sound preferences.

i have tried all the configurations on vlc sound preferences (including the advanced options) including setting it to default and pulse audio (which i would like to stay with).

Im running Ubuntu 9.04 with all the updates. Motherboard "Asustek S775 Intel P35 ATX GLAN"

VLC sound has worked before and then all of a sudden, with no apparent cause it stopped. All help appreciated.

For VLC media player 0.8.6e it's under
Settings - Preferences - Audio
There's also a volume control on the VLC window.
