Try opening up a terminal and running alsaconf as root, then run alsamixer and turn the volume up for every channel.

If you're new to linux the commands to type in the terminal (under Ubuntu) would be:

sudo alsaconf
alsamixer (then use the arrow keys to turn the volume up and the "m" key to unmute channels)

After that try playing an audio file, if that works you'll probably want to run "sudo alsactl store" in a terminal in order to save the settings so the volume is automatically turned on when you boot into your system.

Hope that helps.
