no sound card but loaded sound modules
Hi all,
I have recently built a couple of linux machines to use at my office and am just trying to clean up some software on them that I do not need, and get rid of any last error messages. I built the machines with no sound cards as they do not need them, they are sitting in a back room and only logged into remotely. When I did the OS install, RedHat 9 on both, it loaded software for the sound system and now in my daily logs I get these messages. ---------------------------------- ModProbe Begin --------------------------------- Can't locate these modules: sound-service-1-0: 2 time(s) sound-service-0-0: 2 time(s) sound-service-0-3: 1 time(s) sound-slot-1: 2 time(s) sound-slot-0: 3 time(s) ----------------------------------ModProbe End -------------------------------------- I would really like to fix whatever is causing these messages and again neither of the machines have sound cards nor to I want to install any Thanks mdkelly069 |
Sounds like maybe the motherboards have onboard sound? I can't understand why RedHat would try and load sound modules if the probe at install did not detect some type of sound. So perhaps if you do have onboard sound make sure it is turned off in the BIOS for the computer(s)...
Secondly I am not all that familiar with RedHat, but you could look in /etc/rc.d/inid.d/ and see what scripts are in there.... if you don't know after you get the name of one of the scripts in whatever path try this command and search for part of the modprobe errors you see.. cat /etc/rc.d/init.d/<filename> |grep <error message> Of course substitute <filename> for a filename without the <>...this may get you to a point where if needed you can edit the file(s)...one place to look is for rc.local file..and see what is loading up in there....Hope this helps... zugwrack,
Yes both moterboards have onboard sound and they were both turned off in the BIOS before installation of redhat. I will start digging around in the init.d directory to see what I can find. Also, during install I deselected anything to do with sound and video (movie players, ...), but a lot of them were installed anyway. Thank you for pointing me in some direction to solve this issue Cheers mdkelly069 |
Okay,
I think I have tracked the issue down to KDE. When installing KDE it installs the "arts" sound server and with that it tries to load sound modules that are not present on the systems. I have not shut down, I think, that sound server but still received those above messages in my daily log. Have to do some more looking unless anyone has further ideas Thanks mdkelly069 |
