No Sound Audio In Ubuntu Hardware OK

Please help

The problem I'm having is. I Get no sound when playing music in vlc or any other player like Mplayer in Ubuntu.

the motherboard is a jetway j7f4 board.

The OS is Ubuntu Linux mythbuntu 8.10 debian version - lenny/sid.

I tested the machine on a live puppy linux cd it all works fine.

So It's definetly a problem in ubuntu.

this is what I have done so far.

I had a look at this web site.
http://www.seopher.com/articles/how_...op_or_notebook

And they said to disable the external amplifier tick box, and it should solve the problem.
But it didn't.

So then I had a look at this web site.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...light=no+sound

And I was able to get these details on my sound card.

# aplay -l

Code:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: V8237 [VIA 8237], device 0: VIA 8237 [VIA 8237]
Subdevices: 4/4
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
Subdevice #2: subdevice #2
Subdevice #3: subdevice #3
card 0: V8237 [VIA 8237], device 1: VIA 8237 [VIA 8237]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Lspci -v

Code:
00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 A C97 Audio Controller (rev 60)
Subsystem: Jetway Information Co., Ltd. Device 4765
Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 22
I/O ports at ee00 [size=256]
Capabilities: [c0] Power Management version 2
Kernel driver in use: VIA 82xx Audio
Kernel modules: snd-via82xx
But Now I don't know what to do to solve the problem.

Please can someone help.

Is alsa working correctly?? Try running alsaconf from command line. It would also help if you posted the type of computer you are having the issue with. if it's a desktop the answer could be as simple as disabling your onboard sound in the bios

I managed to fix the original problem with the internal soundcard.

I install a new mixer gui and now the internal sound card is working.

however the sound quality is really poor.

So I have disabled the internal soundcard and connected a Egosys U2A USB soundcard to the PC.

This soundcard is supposed to be linux compatable. but I am unable to get it to work.
The sound card has power but there is no sound.

I have tried the aplay -l and no device is listed.

I have also tried the Lspci -v command but I am unable to see the soundcard listed.
if i run lsusb I get this

# lsusb

Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Is there anything I can do to improve the sound quality with the internal soundcard.

Or how do I get the USB sound card to install properly.

Has anyone any idea's I can try.

Don't know if you've tried visiting the mfg's site for the linux driver. If the card is supposed to be linux compatible they should have a driver for it or, if you received a driver disk with the soundcard have a browse through it and see if there is a linux folder.
