No sound after reboot.

Hey guys, hope you can help me out on this cause I am definitely for a loss. I was playing ioquake3 until I tried to turn off game music. I had rhythmbox running during this. Then the game and every froze up, even X. I couldn't do anything.

I turned off the computer and when it came back on, I had absolutely no sound. I couldn't find anything in System Log or in dmesg that lead to any errors. The sound isn't muted (hehe) and I've restarted alsa plenty of times. I'm running Ubuntu 6.10 on an Acer Aspire 1640. I should also say that everything 'appears' to be running fine. I tried testing the sounds and running alsamixer and everything looks like it should be working...

Any ideas or help will be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried reconfiguring alsa by running alsaconf?

Thanks for the reply,

Nah, I only have alsa-mixer and alsactl installed

I could installing that and try reconfiguring it. I just checked, I couldn't find it in my repos either.

Hmm, I don't think you need to download any extra packages. Just type alsaconf into a terminal (possibly as root) and see where it gets you.

Well I tried typing alsaconf at the command line, but I received a "command not found" error.

However, I discovered the root of the problem. I guess somewhere, somehow, the option for Headphone mode was altered (I'm assuming Headphone option is only available for laptops?). It was set to line in, which obviously won't put out any sound.

So no wonder I wasn't receiving any error messages! :D

I appreciate the replies, thank you.
