I'm attempting to upgrade my FC8 to 9 (and eventually to version 13 or 14 if it's stable by the time I get this fixed), and I can't seem to download the preupgrade package. This box has been quirky for awhile. Missing dependencies, mysteriously vanishing paths in the $PATH variable, etc. Is it possible the repositories are wrong? What am I missing?
you CAN NOT upgrade the DEAD fedora 8 to the DEAD fedora 9 !!!!!
will NEVER WORK !!!!!

THAT WILL NEVER WORK, it never has in the past and NEVER will .
there have been SO MANY changes in fedora that it will not work
back up your personal data and reformat that ext3 fedora8 to ext4 and reformat the /boot partition, it has changed also
then install fedora 13 on A CLEAN AND REFORMATTED DRIVE .

preupgrade DID NOT YET EXIST back in the fedora 8 days
Thanks for the info. The wiki made it sound like it was possible with the preupgrade package.
Is it possible to do all of what you recommended remotely via SSH? I'm only loosely versed in Linux partitioning. I have my backups, but can I make Fedora 13 available via network for the install?
so this is a remote server ?
i would first install rkhunter and ckrootkit and RUN then
fedora 8 has known security holes

from fedora 12 to 13 or fedora 13 to 14
IF AND ONLY IF you have installed fedora SO THAT YOU CAN use the very very experimental preupgrade.
The /boot partition MUST be bigger that 750 meg ( 1 Gig. best) the default fedora 11,12 ,13 install uses a 100 meg size .

Is there a special repository for ckrootkit? I was able to install and run rkhunter and it found 6 suspect programs (all out of date)
Yes, this is a remote server. I started looking at a section of the install guide I hadn't seen before on the network installs (PXE, etc). It sounds like I could use another Linux server on the network to "mirror a mirror" over the web. Is this second server the only way to accomplish this, or is there some way to do it with the one server to be upgraded?
I've done a netinstall with CentOS before, but only from the 10MB or so ISO burned to a CD physically from the console
-- for fedora 8 -- the historical archives --
about 2 years ago the fedora 9,8 ,7,6,5... repos were moved to the historical archive
and that they are not what was listed in the OLD repo( the install repo has the wrong address )
Note: The Fedora releases here, Fedora Core 1 through Fedora 9, are no longer supported or maintained, so they do not receive bug fixes or security updates. We do not recommend using these releases any more. To obtain the latest, supported version of Fedora, please refer to the main download page, http://get.fedoraproject.org.
