no microphone signal with audacity

Hi I need help recording w/ audacity.

I have used audacity under windows for some time w/o out any issues. I am now attempting this on a linux PC and I don't recall that I've ever tried to input sound ever under linux.

I think all the drivers I need are there. I can listen to music, but when i connect a microphone I do not get anything recorded. Not sure where to start or where the problem lies.

Code:
[root@chives ~]# lspci -v
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller
 (rev 02)
        Subsystem: Dell Unknown device 01db
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
        Memory at dffdc000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [60] Message Signalled Interrupts: 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable
-
Capabilities: [70] Express Unknown type IRQ 0

Thanks,

Steve

figured it out. KMix has to be used to turn on and turn up the microphone.
