I will check out the dependencies for kscreensaver, as you suggested.

Thanks for all your help Notwerk... I will investigate the dependencies for kscreensaver.

If I am able to resolve this problem, I will report what I find here.

I seem to have fixed my problem!

As I said earlier, when I log into KDE as root, the screensaver starts, no problem. So after some searching for info, I found a hint in the help.

I basically replaced the [Screensaver] section in my //home/[user]/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc file with the same section from //root/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc.

Here's what I have now:
[ScreenSaver]
DPMS-dependent=false
Enabled=true
Lock=false
LockGrace=60000
Saver=flow.desktop
Timeout=300

The difference between the two was quite a bit, although I suspect it's the "DPMS-dependent=false" line to be the item that was missing from the file.

I had to restart KDE after doing this in order for the changes to take effect.

Anyhow, I hope this helps someone else who was running into the same problem I was...
