No japanese in ID3 tags

I'm trying to get amarok to recognize the Japanese tags on a cd I ripped in k3b. K3b's filenames are rendered perfectly, kanji and all, but the id3 tags in amarok show up as garbage. I've also noticed that this also occurs in konqueror, kaffeine, and VLC. Basically, any player that bothers to parse the tags gets garbage. This makes me think this is a system wide problem, what do you think? I'm running Kubuntu 6.10 with Japanese i18n packages installed for kde as well as the Japanese language pack installed. Japanese file names are no problem, it's just the media tags that don't seem to work. Any ideas? Thanks.
