No interface device running Ethereal

I'm running a Gentoo KDE installation and am trying to get Ethereal up. When I try to select a NIC to use, there aren't any listed. I know it's installed correctly because I can browse the Internet. Please be as specific as possible in your instructions as I'm fairly new to Linux, but have some experience though. Thanks for your help.

Being new to Linux means that you have to read the manuals and the howtos. That is because -as they say- nobody can teach you how to operate an operating system.
In fact the amount of documentation in Linux, IMHO, is greater than in Windows.
Search the man pages,
man command
or
check the manpages from the manpage of linuxquestions.org ie man.linuxquestions.org

By the way,
the command ifconfig shows if ppp or wlan or eth (NIC) connection is on.
ifup eth0 wakes up the first NIC if eth0 has been set properly.
if you have wireless the command is
iwconfig
check the respective manpages.
(There are number of tools(graphical) in your distribution? that makes all these tasks easier.
