No Carrier Detected when Check Carrier = no

Yesterday I upgraded my kernel, and installed modem drivers that would work for the 2.6 kernel.
I got the modem working, and changed the settings in wvdial and gnome-ppp according to the help file that came with the drivers .tar.gz archive. I was able to connect without getting a "No Carrier Detected" error when I had "Check Carrier = no" and "Check carrier line" deselected in gnome-ppp. But today if I try and connect I get "No Carrier Detected" even though gnome-ppp or wvdial aren't supposed to check the carrier line.

Code:

[Dialer Defaults]
Phone = phonenumber
Check Carrier = no
Username = username
Password = password
New PPPD = yes
Modem = /dev/ttySL0
Baud = 115200
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0L3
ISDN = 0
Modem Type = Analog Modem

That is my wvdial.conf with various detailed hidden. Even after searching google, and reading the wvdial man pages, I still can't figure out what's wrong...anyone got any ideas?

I've changed my wvdial.conf file to say "Carrier Check = no" instead of "Check Carrier = no"
I then dialed, and got the same "No Carrier Detected" message, but then wvdial retried, it got no dial tone, then it shutdown. I restarted wvdial and it dialed my ISP, went through it's connecting phase, and says:
Code:

--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.54.0
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.

So, right now, I don't know what the hell is going on, but I guess as long as it works I'm not pissed off :)

And now I am pissed off again!
I try and connect this morning and I get the same "No Carrier Detected" bullshit I did before. And now no matter what I do I can't connect in Linux, using wvdial, or gnome-ppp (gnome-ppp may use wvdial to connect, but I don't think it uses the same config file)

I'm thinking of maybe attempting to get my external modem to work in Linux now :(
