No audio output - at all

Hi!
When I first installed Linux, the speakers on my laptop worked fine. A little tune played each time I logged on, Amarok and Xine worked fine, etc. Now, nothing works. No tune plays on startup, and when I try to run Amarok, or Kaffine, or whatever, to play audio files, I get an "Xine was unable to initialize any audio-drivers"... Ugh. Is Xine the source of my entire system's sound? If the tune at startup doesn't play, could the problem be something other than Xine, and then my Xine error is due to the system's sound issue?
Someone please help..
I hope it has nothing to do with xgl, I don't think it does, but I remember audio stopped working around the time I installed that.. Which could have been anything, becuase I did a lot to my system that day.

Ok. Now the sound is working, but I don't think it's working properly.
I re-installed the ALSA packages, and now Headphones work, and also the main speakers when Headphones aren't plugged in.. But it sounds weird, as if it's still headphones just turned up really really loud... And in my volume controle there is no "Master Volume", only Headphones, PCM, Front Line and Mux Line... I'm still trying different things, but whoever can help speed this up, please do.

SO: I think this is a problem with my system. "Master" should be available under Volume Controle and it isn't. I tried YaST.. I need to install my sound card, which is the SB Audigy card, but whenever I try to do so it tells me: "An error occured during the installation of [SB Audigy]. The kernel module snd-emu10k1 for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters."
