NO audio in XINE

Hi!

I recently compiled xine to work with vdr and it all went fine. I patched the sources and installed everything that was needed but now I can see the video output of all my media files but without audio! It's kinda frustrating...i've been troubleshooting for days with no success so i decided to ask you gurus some help :P

Even when i play an mp3 I can se the progress bar moving and the seconds passing but there's no audio?

what can I do??

please help! (...I just passed a few days ago to linux so there's no more windows on my pc ... i don't want to reinstall it just to watch a few dvds! )

system sounds work just fine as well as xmms ( eSound plugin for output) ...I'm using OSS mixer and my device is a CMedia PCI sound card ( aureon 5.1 Fun from terratec ) on an ASUS P4P800 mobo.

..thnx!

P.S. I've tried many different audio channels too, it won't change...do you think it's a compiling error??

A shot in the dark...

Try to change to alsa or something in xmms and if that doesn't work either you probably don't have permissions for your devices.
If that would be the case try

chmod 777 -R /dev/snd

ass root. (You shouldn't have 777 permissions, but if that works then you know where your problem is).

Then you would be able to play audio with xine.

You could try mplayer or vlc if you don't have the patience with xine.

it didn't work...

I found out that my kernel uses alsa drivers while XINE abandoned the alsa support long ago

So i decided to install alsa-oss compatibility, but nothing changed..must i recompile the kernel and enable oss drivers at this point?? or am i just doing something wrong?

PS I'm using a debian Ubuntu 5.04 distribution.

Xine abandoned alsa support long ago? Why do you think so?

The problem could very well be that you haven't got alsa installed correctly, becuase then xine would find it and you would be able to use alsa as an audio driver.

Have you installed alsa-utils (so that you can get the program alsa-mixer)?

Run alsamixer and make sure both volume/master and pcm are boosted up.

Try to use alsa in xmms. (you must have xmms-alsa plugin installed)
Does this work?
