News Ticker Software.
Is there a software for Linux that displays News, Market info., Weather etc., on the desktop , preferably as a bar/newsticker ?
Thanks. Vijay |
I wrote a Java program to do just this - it reads a remote rss feed and displays them as scrollings links which can be clicked on to open the whole article in the default browser. The only trouble is that it doesn't update as the feed updates (so it wouldn't be much good for stock if it changes a lot). It needs java 1.5. I can't even guarantee that it works, actually. It's been quite a while since I maintained it. Anyway, if you have java 1.5 and you want to give it a go, try http://www.sf.net/projects/joanne and a brief usage description is on the software page on www.retrojunkies.co.uk

Oh, I should also add that I think both KDE and Gnome have panel applets to do what you want. They're definitely gonna be better than what I wrote!

I don't have KDE or GNOME. Are there any other similar applications for those who use ICEWM/XFCE etc., ?
Thanks. Vijay |
Also I would like the names of the KDE and GNOME packages that offer this News Ticker. Thanks in advance.

News Ticker in KDE
Make a new child toolbar.
Right click it and put in a new applet newsticker. Click the little box to the side and away you go. |
I am not a programmer. SO can't do as suggested above.
I found one and am trying it now: http://gk-newsticker.sourceforge.net/download.shtml |

anyways...http://webcvs.kde.org/kdeaddons/kont...r/Attic/...but dont download it there....you have it on your distro already. Its in the pakage but as an addon...you have to go to your pakage manager and search for it...then install. |
knewsticker depends on kdebase. I don't have kdebase.
Also, I am using Damn Small Linux with apt, this seems to be an unstable version and hence doesn't download the applet.. Vijay |
