HELP ! how do you find and run Fdisk when using Suse

type 'fdisk' - I assume I am missing something...

I wish... we've been doing that but it comes back as file name not known.. we found the way into the manual of Fdisk so Phil is trying to understand how to run it now.. We installed Linux Suse 7 into a 20G HD and now we'd like to install Windows ME into there as well, but Windows won't load so we thought we had to fdisk Linux, install Windows and then reinstall Linux into a new partition...
We had another problem with Suse, it didn't like our printer or our winmodem.. big learning curve here, but we love it.

I bought SuSE and struggled with partititions, took it back and struggled with Redhat/ fdisk can't understand the partitions. I ended up downloading partitionmagic and cleaned the drive entirely. I eventually figured out to delete all partitions, booted the redhat disk (which I transferred the rawrite utility from another pute'), booted up and Redhat flew the process. It even found my pcmia card and I got online instantly! I'm brand new to Linux and have a thopusand questions, I love the way it looks, particurly Gnome tho' it seems more difficult to configure, I guess I'm tainted by 4 years of windows dependancy. I use a Tosh lap 430cdt and none of the sites/pages were helpful to me, I figured out eventually and if anyone is using a laptop at least, delete all partitiomns and THEN load LINUX!

Just curious, but have you gone to the SuSE site and looked through the support database? Knowledge base? They have an excellent site and you will probably find what you are looking for there. Also, the manuals you got with your distro are a big help when installing and configuring. I would personally use YaST to set up my printer. As far as the winmodem, depending what it is (lucent chipset, etc) there may or may not be support for it under linux. Checkout http://www.grapevine.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html about your modem.

Try to locate your fdisk program with this command:
locate fdisk
or
whereis fdisk
About your winmodem. My advice, by a new one unless you really want to work hard. It might our might not work.

Ugge is right on, buy a new modem...
Forget fdisk to uninstall, use partition magic (it's free go to bootdisk.com)) try to reinstall win98 from their partition magic, there's tons of options but you need to remove that LILO as FDisk can't understand it,,, I spent two days fooling around and I guarantee PM will solve your problem. Destroy all partitions and then shutdown and use your PM disk to reinstall (use failsafe). I've just ben down that road so trust me. By the way Redhat's advice with the manual for 7.1 was useless and utterly ineffective.

SuSE. I took SuSe back to the store becuase I couldn't set up graphics or modem and redhat was a pinch with their install. SuSE has great support and tghorough manuals and were very helpful in my e-mailings, redhat thus far are rubbish in support, so buy redhat 7.1 and use SuSE support!

Really can't see buying a new modem if you don't have to. Hard work? First off, it you have windows running just look in modem in control panel. click diagnostics and click on more info. pay particulat attention to ATI3. Let me know what you see in there.
If windows is not working and SuSE is then do this:

script jjg.txt
/sbin/lspci -v

this will create a file where we can check your communications controller.

If you have a modem based on a lucent chipset, the solution is very simple. Just download and install ltmodem_5.99b drivers. This "hard" procedure should take less than ten minutes.
If the modem is rockwell (=Conexant) then indeed you should probably buy a new modem.

Sorry Dallam, I assumed that all wimodems were incompqtible, mine is a conexant and consequently I have to get another,,,damn, can't do that for a while. I'm new o Linux and will try to keep my trap shut in future...-)
