newbie, problem installing google bar for Mozilla
 

Hello all,

I am using Mandrake 9.1. I was trying to install google bar to Mozilla logged in as a regular user and it did not let me. The error was something like "Permission denied". I then logged in as root and installed it selecting all user when prompted.
It works just fine when I am logged as root, but when I try to start mozilla from a different user it hangs for a few seconds as if it were trying to open it but it does not open it. It does not display any error either though.

Could somebody help me with this?

Get Opera (www.opera.com)... has had a google bar built in with the past few versions.

I am just used to work in Netscape and Mozilla.
It would be nice to find out what could have happened so that I don't do it again. I mean should I even install applications as root? If not then how would I get passed those security issues that prevent me from installing to all users?

What use has suggesting Opera? It's a closed commercial product, and Mozilla is better anyway. :-P

Heh, so that attempt failed miserably. "Chrome registration failed when registering the locale folder, with xpinstall error:-214". Seems like a problem with language, right? After this message it asked me if it should point the browser to an explanation, but that didn't seem to do anything.

And another bug... if I try it again, even after restarting Mozilla, it keeps only asking me if I am ready to install it for ALL users. Oh well, it seems this plugin installing part is still rather untested. I don't see any plugins options in the preferences either. Maybe try Firebird? I was using that on Windows and the plugins worked fine mostly. Oh my god, I'm suggesting another browser. ;-)

How do you get that 'all users' option? Does that depend on the xpi? Most of the plugins and themes and extensions and whatnot insist on writing to the global /usr/lib/mozilla/chrome directory or whatever and I can install them as root but not as user, and can't enable them for user even if I do install as root which I radically extremely do not want to do - nor do I want to give user permission to the directory. I just want them installed in ~/.mozilla.

The 'all users' option is indeed not present in all plugins. The installation process seems to vary in a few other areas as well. Some plugins have also asked me if I wanted to install to my home directory if I remember correctly. All in all, I think there's still a lot of work to be done there to make it more stable but maybe even more important, to make it more intuitive and transparent.

As for the original problem, the Google bar, if you really want it vladi, I think it would be best if you emailed the author about your problem.
