Arrow Newbie Needs Help ASAP

I just got done with installing RedHat 8.0 on my computer. Everything seems to be running just fine but I need a few programs to get some things to work with. First I need to know how to get programs that I download for linux to install, where to install and how to install them. Secondly I need to know how to get my mp3's and cd's to work with that xxms or even the cd player. They both gave me troubles and niether would work. My sound works fine I hear everything else that makes a noise like the instant messenger and stuff, but not on those. I would really appreciate any help I could get and links to resources for me to read up on too. Thanks.

you can download the RPM package, and run "rpm -i packagename" to install them. the system will take care of everything.

optionally, if you download the traditional unix tarball package, you run "tar xvzf filename" to extract and uncompress it. then you read the README and INSTALL files to get detailed instructions.

RedHat uses RPMs which stand for RedHat Package Manager files. You use the RPM command at the command line or the application installation program to install the programs.

As for what you need, please be specific. It's sometimes helpful to launch programs from a command line to get error messages that you can relate. For instance, find the command that is used to launch the app you want. type it at the command line and tell us here what error messages you get generated...

to play mp3 in redhat you need patch that can be downloaded from www.xmms.org from the first page secondly programs if you want them in rpm forman www.rpmfind.net is the place and for redhat www.freshrpms.net is another site to install them type rpm -i packagename and if you are using gnome or kde double click on them a package manager will open and install them if they are in .tar.gz pakage you need to compile them by hand and you will need development packages from redhat cd install them using redhat-config-packages

okay what I'm looking for are some good file sharing, web design, networking tools, games, programming, and drivers for a few things and just general RedHat Linux stuff. I have used XP so long that im used to having those setup screens that walk you through everything. Are the RPM's similar to that?

There is no native flash player for Linux... at least last I heard,...

You have to have the codeweavers plugin thing installed to run the win flash player...

Yes there is. It's downloadable at the Macromedia site. Version 6 comes with a plugin for Netscape/Mozilla and gflashplayer, a gtk front-end for viewing flash movies.

As for that error, I'm not sure - never had any problems myself when installing Flash. It looks like you're trying to install it from a normal user account though rather than as root. Personally, I'd install it as root to make it system wide.
