Newbie looking for help

Hi there!
I'm a total newbie to Linux.
I just installed suse 9.2 and I encountered 2 problems:

1-My suse doesn't shut down/restart whatsoever

2-I couldn't find source websites that could be added to the Yast2, in order to get updates or new programs for suse, like KDevelop, mplayer or eclipse.

I'd appreciate any help!!
thank you in advance

For the shutdown issue, try the command line

Power off would be "halt"
Reboot would be "shutdown -r now" or "reboot"

Both will likely require root privelage

For the additional software

add the following to the Sources of Installation

ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/sup...2/yast-source/
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/sup...2/yast-source/

I haven't gotten 9.2 yet, so I don't know if there is much in those updates. Mplayer I believe requires compiling and wouldn't be listed in the sources. Not sure of eclipse.

As another point of assistance, more descriptive subjects can sometimes get your questions answered more quickly. Since "newbie looking for help" can mean nearly anything, it could get ignored or missed by someone with a quick answer. An example subject for this post could have been "suse shutdown & updates" or "new suse install: shutdown? new software?"

...just an idea ;)

I've never used Suse, and until I read the post by musicman_ace--Suse is right under his name, so you can trust him on this...heh--I thought you might be dealing with the "other" shutdown.

I won't confuse the issue by detailing it here, but be aware if you switch distros that many commands have slightly different options and syntaxes from one version/distro to another.

Oh yeah... Is it "soos" or "soo-suh" or "soo-see" or "soo-zee?"

Don't despair. Suse 9.2 FTP is supposed to be on the Suse FTP servers tomorrow

its been out since the 7th, but it is extremely slow. I figure I'll hold off a week since other users are reporting 9.2 with a few problems. As I stated in another post, Novell might just change my mind about the SusE distro.

I must have fooled someone in to thinking I know what I'm going Ok, being serious - DollyDoll, you can ask me anything you need while using SusE. If I don't know the answer, my local LUG will help out. You can also hit me up on messenger or email, located in my profile. Explore the different distros out there to find what best fits you. I use Slack when stability is a must and SusE 9.1 when I want cool features. Those are the reasons why I picked the distros, some people are die-hard redhat or debian fans. I've tried every major distro and I came back to those two.

heyyyhoooo!!!
I managed to get hands on a printed copy of the suse linux 9.2 user and admin guide...looked for power management, and despite it didn't give me the exact way of solving it, I got it right!
from the BIOS, disable ACPI =disabled, so there's no need of recompiling the kernel and putting there acpi = off...it worked!! the pc shuts down properly now!
thank you guyz!
