Newbie Alert- you need apt-get for Redhat

Hi All,

Have installed and started using apt for Redhat avaible from

www.freshrpms.net (select the apt link).

This utility helps download distro packages without the need to sweat on dependencies. It's availble for Mandrake and SUSE as well. There is a GUI interface Synaptic, which you can also get if your unfamiliar with the command line for apt. (Abundant doco's avaible on line). It also bypasses the hassles associated with RedHat's Demo accounts (Stupid idea!)

There is a default source-list which points you to freshrpms. I haven't tried to point it anywhere esle yet, but it should just be a matter of vi /apt/sources-list.

I recommend this utility for newbies, or for anyone who hates dependecy problems.

Regards

Mick

Yeah, definately a good idea for some. But, some of would much rather go through the dependency hell just to be sure we know EXACTLY what is on our systems.

Thumbs up

i'm definitely gonna start using apt. i'm tired of downloading a package, and then downloading its dependencies, and then downloading the dependencies' dependencies, and by the time i've installed all of the dependencies i forget what package i was trying to install in the first place
