Newbe needs help installing programs

I have just installed RH 9 and I have downloaded a few updates and also Mozilla Firebird but in the download I saved all thes programs to disk as Idid not know what program to open them with as wit windows you hwt two choices open or run so they are still sitting in the download manager and I just dont know how to install , please walk me through it as I know nothing and I mean nothing .

what kind of programs have you got to install?

if the programs is ended with .tar.gz, then you could take a look at the following article

if its a rpm, then you could type "rpm -i filename" in the terminal, it should install your software.

for more information, you could take a look at the documents that came with your distro, the one i have is called 'Maximum RPM' that came with Red Hat. or you could use the search option.
