New Opera 8 beta for Linux is pretty snappy.

I'm a diehard Firefox fan, but I just dl'd the new Opera 8 beta for Linux, and I have to admit it's pretty snappy. It might be worth a try if you like variety. I know I'll hang on to Firefox, but I'm glad there's still plenty of life left in Opera.

You can get it at http://www.opera.com/download/?ver=8.0b1

True, but based on my old Windows license for Opera 7 I was able to get a Linux license for free. They used to require you to buy separate licenses for each platform, but now one registration gets you licenses for all platforms. So if you have an old Opera license, it may be worth looking into.

At any rate, the beta is free, and I think you can use the program as long as you like if you don't mind the ad banner.

(And, though it's not open source, it's still a blow against the empire, right?)

blow? empire? If you're motivated to change browsers only through some kind of irrational cool hatred of microsoft then don't bother trying to rationalize your decisions.

Nope, no irrational cool hatred of Microsoft, only an interest in seeing competition work in the interest of the consumer. I think it's worth supporting alternative software (open-source, shareware, start-up companies, small firms, etc.) if only to make sure that the largest companies do a better job. But I use Microsoft stuff, too, and I think Microsoft makes better products because of its competition.

"Blows Against the Empire" is an old Jefferson Starship (née Jefferson Airplane) album. We're here to have fun, right?
