New lines in gnome-terminal overlapping old lines instead of scrolling

It's kinda hard to describe it any better than that. One application that I can reproduce it with is vim. I open an existing document, hit O (start new line above current line), and what happens is the block cursor is overlapping the first letter of the current line. If I type, it'll overlap the rest of the line. Once I hit escape, it looks normal. A similar effect happens in irssi, where the latest message is being overlapped by the blue status bar at the bottom.

This only happens when using gnome-terminal. Xterm behaves normally.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 dist-upgraded from 8.04. Unfortunately I didn't notice if it was happening before the upgrade, but I'm willing to bet it doesn't.

Anyone here ever have this problem or have any ideas on how to fix it? Thanks!

i think you have a problem with the upgrade.if you have a ubuntu 8.10 cd then format and re-install the os,hope that will solve this weird issue.

I'm just gonna wait until 9.04. This is a fresh install anyway, so I'm not that bothered by it. I was just hoping to find out what the problem is instead of taking the shotgun approach. ;)
