well NetworkManager is a back end service, not a gui tool, so will run regardless of gnome telling you. The icon is nm-applet which you can load up if for some reasons it's not there already. Given that CentOS is a server OS and shouldn't be being run in a dynamic network environment, do you really need it?

You're right. It's running in the background. Most of the time the icon is on the system tray but for some reason it disappeared on me today. I fixed it though. I just did the good ol' reboot and the icon is back. Thanks.

i have disabled NetworkManager (# chkconfig --level 35 NetworkManager off) and i have put ( nm_controlled="no" ) in ifcfg-eth1 file coz i want to use default network services...
how do i start my internet connection while icon network connection icon is missing on taskbar at top coz disabling networkmanager there is no (system eth0 and eth1) in network connetion > wired tab ( & plz tell me the procedure how to setup pppoe connection without networkmanager )...
