networking wierdness with a crossover cable

I am using a crossover cable to connect my two computers, and it refuses to allow certain things. I can ping between the two machines, and I can ssh in either direction, but when I try nmap, ftp, or telnet, the connection fails, and ftp and telnet return "no route to host", and nmap just sits there, doing nothing. I tried to tunnel ftp over ssh, which appeared to work, but it said"no route to host" when I tried to get some files. Both of them run fedora core 4, and I used the graphical configuration tool to give them both static ips at 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 respectively. One of them has two ethernet cards, and uses eth0 to connect to the rest of the network(which is upstairs) and eth1 to connect to the other computer.

Please tell me why I can't get certain programs to use the connection. I would also like to figure out how to do ip forwarding so that I can connect to the main network from my computer that doesn't have two connections.

Please print out the results of "route" for each machine and "ifconfig" for each interface on each machine.
