I'm running RHEL4-Update 2 on my Linux box in a network with a few other WinXP machines. I've used Gnome desktop but am switching to KDE and I cannot get network browsing to work in KDE. Actually, in KDE I can manually run Nautilus --browser and set the location to smb:/// and get a full view of my network much like Network Neighborhood in WinXP.
From the Window's machines I can see my Linux box and files just fine. But not the same story from my Linux box in KDE. Using Konqueror and location remote:/lan, I get a list of folder icons with ip addresses of the machines on my network. And this is useless. If I click on one, it pushes down to a folder labeled smb and when I click on it, it says that file or folder smb:/192.168.x.x does not exist.
If I type smb:/// in the location of firefox, it at least shows me the name of my workgroup. And if I use smb://mywkgrp as the location, I get a list of all the machines on my network with their real names. But when I click on them, firefox tries to open them as a text file. However, if it enter smb://pcname, I can navigate thru the folders successfully.
Even though I have connectivity between my Linux machine and the other XP machines on my network. I still don't have a convenient way to navigate from within KDE. Or at least I don't know HOW to do it yet.
Please help... Going bald fast!!
If you've used Gnome's network browser, or WinXP's network neighborhood, then you know what functionality I'm trying to find in KDE.
Thanks Finlay. I'm running KDE 3.4.3. I've already tweaked Konqueror to look more like a traditional file manager. So I don't readily see the same attributes. Any ideas on how to reset to default state?
I do have a location bar and an icon at the end that which says 'go' when I roll the mouse over it. Is that the same go button?
That being said, if I enter remote:/ and hitgo, I'll get a list of 4 icons: local network, network services, samba shares, and add a network folder...
Clicking on local network gives me a list of folder icons named with ip addresses - representing the machines on my network. If I click on a folder, it displays a single smb folder. Clicking on the smb folder produces an error: The file or folder smb://192.168.x.x/ does not exist.
Clicking on network services pushes down into an empty window.
Clicking on samba shares produces an error: The file or folder smb:/ does not exist.
Well I thought I had samba configured and working.... From a windows machine on my network, I can find my linux box in network neighborhood, navigate throughout and can read, write, move, copy files at will.
From my linux box, I can't do squat thru Konqueror. However, if I open a shell and run nautilus --browswer smb:///, it will open to my network and I can view all machines on the network. I can navigate thru them with username/pw. But I cannot drag a file from the nautilus window onto my KDE desktop or folder. Coincidentally, I get the same kind of error message: The file or folder smb://workgroup/machine/blabla.bla/ does not exist.
So, do I have samba configured and working??? I kinda don't think so.... I've searched for the error msg and can't find any clues that apply to my situation.
ok that looks fine
we are at the log file point:
check for any samba log files and look for errors
also open up ksystemlog and check out the xorg log for errors
Ok, I cleared the log files and restarted. Interesting to note that lisa service doesn't seem to start cleanly. Where do I find the xorg log file?

I found an xorg.0.log and it only showed a few warnings for display size, or display clock being out of freq range. These are all display related parameters - I don't readily see how this log file would apply to the samba/network browsing prob. Did I misinterpret something?
I have encountered the same problem with you before. It was SELinux that was interfering with my samba. Try to disable the SELinux protection (Security Level Configuration window) to smbd and nmbd daemon and other related samba daemons. It worked for me, I hope it will work for you too.
In Fedora 4, I do this. Please find the equivalent menu in RHEL4 you are using, ok.
1. Open the Security Level Configuration window (in KDe, go to KMenu->System Settings->Security Level).
2. You'll be prompted for the root password, so enter your root password.
3. The Security Level Configuration window will now appear. Click on SELinux tab.
4. On the Modify SELinux Policy, you would see a Samba branch. Expand it and check on the "Disable SELinux protection for nmbd and smbd daemon".
5. You may also check on "Allow Samba to share users home directories" if you plan to share your home directories.
6. Click on OK.
In my setting, I also disabled the protection on winbind daemon. Try it first without disabling the protection on winbind daemon. If that doesnt work, then try disabling it, ok?
