nemo doesn't see file permissions

Running Debian 9.8 with Cinnamon 3.2.7.

Nemo file manager won't detect permissions for external drives. I can take ownership, change permissions, and rwx from both the command line and Dolphin, but Nemo won't work.

Any ideas?

Use Dolphin to alter permissions, since it's available :twocents:

The permissions are already fine, they don't need altering. Dolphin reads them, the system reads them, Nemo is on it's own mission.

I would prefer to use the Nemo file manager you see.

Edit menu -> Preferences

Set them to do what you want.

The List Columns tab will configure to view permissions. These are per-folder settings. I've set mine to resemble the output of ls -l

Set defaults on the Views tab.

The permissions are fine, even Nemo even sees them as I want them (I am the owner blacked out)... pic 1

but when I try to write into the folder it gives a permissions error... pic 2

Bug maybe?

What are the actual permissions on that (presumably) directory? Your screen shots don't show that.

I've figured out what the issue is, the drive is faulty. I did some bad voodoo to it some time ago but figured it was okay.

When Etcher flashed an image to it it changed the apparent block size to 2048, but of course my machine still saw it as the 512 it actually is. Then I erased the file system and reformatted as mdos, but something went wrong somewhere, I guess I should have just respecified the right block size (which would have led to the data destruction anyway) and then reformatted. Live and learn.

Thanks for your help anyway guys.
