need X server and DISPLAY to work properly -- dealing with Kazaa installed with wine

When tried installing Kazaa at the command line with wine after getting all required windows 98 dll's This is what it read:

x11drv: Can't open display
Please ensure that your X server is running and that $DISPLAY is set correctly.

1) How do I ensure that X server is running
2) and that display is set corectly?

Thanks.

p/s

steps I followed to install:
bartendavid web site

Those without a Windows 98 installation may download a tar.gz archive here, containing all necessairy libraries.

tar xzvf kazaa_dll.tar.gz
mv *.dll /home/user/.wine/fake_windows/Windows/System/

With all the DLL's in place in the (fake windows-dir of Wine), we now make Wine clear they exist:

cd /home/user/.wine
vi config

Almost at the bottom of this configfile we add the following rule:

[AppDefaults\\kazaa.exe\\DllOverrides]
"commctrl" = "native"
"comctl32" = "native"
"comdlg32" = "native"
"msvcrt" = "native"
"shdoclc" = "native"
"shdocvw" = "native"
"shlwapi" = "native"
"urlmon" = "native"
"wininet" = "native"

[Version]
"Windows"="win98"

In order to install Kazaa:

wine kazaa_lite_172_english.exe

Well I don't know how to fix your wine problem but I can tell you trying to get kazaa to work in linux is a waste of time. There are many (better) P2P apps available that run natively in linux.

I agree with adz. Take a look at giFT. With the proper plugins, you can search the kazaa (FastTrack) network, as well as Gnutella and openFT, all at the same time.

Enjoy!
