Need video file splitter
I need recommendations for a video file splitter. Googling for 'video file splitter' returns 84,000 results, none of which I recognise from a know website.
Searching this website returns no results of 'video file splitter'. What I have is 80 tapes from a Sony HI-8 CamCorder. I have extracted those to an AVI file and converted to a MP4. These tapes run from 48 mins. to an hour and 48. They are lessons from a fly tying class that my fishing club conducts. Some date back to '92. Each tape/file will consist of one subject, such caddis flies. There will be illustrations on tying several stages of the life cycle. I would like to break each tape into chapters by life cycle. In the repository there is 'Wavbreaker File Splitter', something similar for video would be ideal. Any suggestion on where/what to look for? TIA Dave |
The first thing that pops into my head is Avidemux. Pitivi is also good, and would allow you to do stuff like fade-in/out, title screens, etc. With that vast amount of video content though, you may be at it for a while. What would probably make life a little easier for you is something that would split the file at every occurrence of black frames for more than x number of seconds. I can't think of anything that does that right off the top of my head, but I'll look around for a bit and see what I can find.

Apparently Avidemux supports scanning for black frames. Just click "Tools", then "Scan for black frames".

I have found Kino to be very powerful for video editing.

Thanks for the avidemux link. In the past I've split .avi files with mencoder, but it's tedious watching the videos to get the start/stop points, e.g. (ss is the start time and endpos is the duration):
Code:
mencoder -o output.avi -ovc copy -oac copy -ss 01:05:53 -endpos 00:04:47 input.avi |
Cinelerra is good.

kdenlive - drop all tapes to line, add chapters screen and burn as DVD's. its better to have original avi files to archive video quality.
