need to run a server remotely from a windows machine
Hi I just bought a new server. I would like to put linux 9.0 on it, stick it in a back room in our offices and run it from a windows xp pro machine. I was wondering the best way to do that. I would like to be able to look at the desktop of the linux machine and such so that I had a graphical interface. Something like what pc anyware does for running a remote machine for windows. Is this possible? Any information would be really awesome....thanx.

I believe you mean RedHat 9.0 :)
If by "running" it you mean logging in, administering, running programs, etc., then yes, that's quite easy. All you need is a secure shell daemon (sshd) which probably comes standard with just about any distribution. As for getting a graphical interface, there are a number of options available. The only free one I know of is to use Cygwin, which provides a number of Unix utilities for Windows, among them an XFree86 server, which you will need to run on your Windows machine. Their site explains how to do this (it's called a remote X session). There are some commercial programs for Windows that do basically the same thing, if you'd rather go that route. Hummingbird software makes one called Exceed. |

Another good alternative is VNC running through an ssh tunnel.
