Need to configure proxy (Privoxy) in Galeon w/out Gnome

Objective: I want to configure Galeon 2.0 to use Privoxy.

Context: I don't use Gnome, though I do have some Gnome components installed (not Gnome Control Center, though).

Problem: Galeon's interface says to use "GNOME Control Center: Desktop Preferences" to set the proxy.

Constraint: I don't want to install any more Gnome-stuff than is absolutely necessary.

Solution: ???

Thanks for any suggestions.

Edit privoxy's config file so you have permission to edit via the web interface.

all configuration files are located in /etc/privoxy/ by default.

Once you have it set to allow you can edit the config by going to
http://www.privoxy.org/config/

Thanks for the reply. Note, however, that I'm note trying to configure Privoxy. I'm trying to configure the browser to use Privoxy. I'm not wanting to make any changes in the Privoxy configuration.

With every other browser I've used (Firefox, Opera, various Gecko-derivatives other than Galeon), this could be set in browser preferences. With Galeon, however, you're expected to configure proxies in a central location, i.e., GNOME Control Center: Desktop Preferences.

I'm trying to figure out how to get to these settings, since I don't use Gnome and have only a few Gnome pieces installed.

Thanks.

Well, I may have stumbled on to the solution. You can configure proxies for Galeon through about:config (in the address box), I think.

At least it seems to be working ...

... and another way, in case you're interested

If you do want to configure proxy settings globally and you don't have a full Gnome installation, you may be able to use gconf-editor. I succeeded in emerging (compiling and installing) gconf-editor on my Gentoo wystem which otherwise has minimal Gnome components.

This interface let me enter values needed to get Privoxy to work with Galeon. In my case, those values are:

/system/http_proxy/host=localhost (string)
/system/http_proxy/port=8118 (integer)
/system/http_proxy/use_http_proxy=enabled (check box)
/system/proxy/mode=manual (string)

The gconf-editor interface will make it clear to you how to enter the values.

While I don't have a full panoply of Gnome stuff on my system, I apparently do have enough to support gconf-editor. These functions are handled in the Gnome control center for users who use complete installations of Gnome.
