Powerdvd (plays as many movie formats as possible) thanks[/QUOTE] Once again, xine and some programs that use the xine-libs (Kaffeine, Totem-Player) are very nice. VLC should be also fine to play videos. MPlayer is great. If you can play most video codecs depends mostly on if you have installed the win32-codecs that are available at the MPlayer site. |
If you're using Mandriva, then just install all xine-related packages from the PLF repositories, plus xine-ui.
As for browsing pictures, my preference goes to gqview. Yves. |
Xine-ui is heavy, I recommend using some other front-end. Actually Amarok uses xine-engine by default at least in Ubuntu, and it can also use gstreamer if one likes, plus others too. I consider Amarok just a front-end.
My recommendation: as it's said, get the xine-engine and xine-plugins. After this get a front-end; xine-ui will do but it's heavy and ugly, Amarok could be better (resembles Winamp and/or iTunes somehow). You can also use Kaffeine (for KDE) or Totem (totem-xine for Gnome; or totem-gstreamer if you use gstreamer as the backend). For playing dvds you simply need some files; most distributions won't give these by default because of the-reason-that-has-already-been-said. Get libdvdcss for your distribution; Ubuntu and many others provide a simple packet in some reposity that you can install and after this you're able to play commercial, crypted DVDs with your favourite engine like xine. |
For image management, Pixie Plus, perhaps? http://www.mosfet.org/mosfet/pixie/
