need some help on this install; upgrading kernel?
My server is currently using the az11 motherboard...but on FIC's website it said Redhat 6.2 (or the kernel i should say) isnt comaptible with it..I tried it out for myself and it was true ;). anyway...according to FIC, I have to update the kernel http://www.fica.com/techsupport/faq/...2/az11.stm#Q12
I dont like 7.0 (buggy) and 7.1 was nice...but just didnt work right at all (couldnt get things to work....appz would crash). But I like 6.2 and know it better than 7.1. So how do i upgrade the kernel? The problem is that as linux is loading, there is a kernel panic...any info is appreciated...as win2k aint the best server :p. |
bump...anyone? i guess all i need is a good Howto on upgrading the kernel...I could probably take it from there.

So you currently have a system that works enough to recompile the kernel yeah? If not then thats your first goal! Clearly you need the system up in the first place so a kernel panic on boot is gonna cause you some serious problems! Then have a read of http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html it will explain things in better detail that I could, and probably better than anyone on the forum could either - afterall thats what its been written to do. Once you read it and are fully confused have a go at it, then post the specific questions back here.

well i dont have linux installed on the system ATM becuase i needed a web server...but i can install linux..but i wouldnt exactly call it a working system...can i do this from like a boot disk or something?
|
You need to have a system that boots OK to be able to compile a kernel... The idea is that you get a base system running then built a custom kernel to suite your needs for that specific system.

so i cant upgrade the kernel at all? i need to have a perfectly booting linux install?
|
Well how far does the system get? You need to be able to get to a command prompt and run the make config scripts, compile and install the kernel. The only other alternative is to get someone else to build a kernel for you, you'd then still need to get onto the system to copy across the new kernel then run lilo so you can boot with the new kernel.
If you're having kernel panics during startup then you might want to remove any non-essential hardware until you get to rebuild the kernel and find the problem. So non-essentials like sounds cards, SCSI cards (if your not on SCSI hard disks), network cards, etc can all go, then be put back in later. It'll also let you find out whats causing the panics. cheers Jamie... |
bah...the heck with it...ill put 6.2 on...work on it for a few minutes. if it doesnt work ill just stick 7.1 on it....I WILL GET IT TO WORK ;) :)
