Audacity and Rosegarden

Hi!

Have you tried these?

Audacity does a nice multitrack recording studio:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Rosegarden is eqivalent to Cubase:
http://www.rosegardenmusic.com/

There are two linux operating systems that are primarily set up for audio recording:

The Agnula Project:
http://www.agnula.org/

Dynebolic:
http://www.dynebolic.org/

Not sure what to suggest as a closest equivalent for Cool Edit Pro, but I hope these will get you started!

I would personally recomend an application called ardour.
It's a bit hard to set up and there are plenty of good optimisation features that you might want to do, i suggest joining #ardour at irc.freenode.org and ask over there how to set it up with jack and realtime-lsm...

muse is also good for midi recording and
there is a user interface in tcl/tk to ecasound which is a powerfull cammand line recording tool
i think it's called TkEca or something like that look on the ecasound website
also a very cool mixing program called jamin

it's very hard to explain how it all works together but it's best if you are new to try a music oriented distribution (i like demudi) debian - music - distribution

otherwise you need to build a new kernel with a security module to enable real time clock access or run all audio apps with sudo or as root
then the apps that do the thing are
LADCCAD -- session manager
LADSPA -- effects plugins
QJACKCTL -- for running jack and showing connections
JACK -- low latency sound server
ARDOUR -- multi track recorder
