need help with X, can't see png files!!!

i have no idea what i have done, but suddenly, while running xfce4, the environment wouldn't respond to any command, except the already running firefox browser. the next time i booted up, all X progs tell me they can't recognise the format for the png files. i tried reinstalling libpng and zlib, etc but to no avail. i badly need a solution.
any help would be appreciated greatly
thanx

error message

it's got something to do with gdk-pixbuf, from the error message:

Gdkpixbuf-Critical **; file gdkpixbuf.c: line 389 (gdk_pixbuf_get_height): assertion: 'pixbuf != null' failed
