Thanks, I can do that. I have never had a code problem with VLC and mplayer, but I'd like to use Totem and Banshee to watch videos and listen to music. Is there a way to use them with codecs? How could I do that?
Actually not even mplayer is working. When I launch a wmv file it reports:

Alright, maybe you need to tweak your settings a bit. Launch mplayer and right-click, then select Preferences. Try out the various options under the Video and Codec headings. Those can make a huge difference.
It also looks as if your mplayer doesn't have its fonts properly configured. This shouldn't stop the player from working but you'll get an annoying pop-up whenever you launch it. As a solution, you need to create a symlink from one of your fonts files to /home/username/.mplayer. I'm afraid I've forgotten the particulars but the information should be easy to hunt down using google.
