Need help unlocking adept (apt) package mgr.

I just finished installing Kubuntu and finished adding repositories. While installing packages, Java 1.5 JRE locked up and killing the process did not work so I rebooted the system. Now apt is locked and only accessible in read-only mode because of the aborted installation. I am sure there is a file I need to delete to unlock these changes but I do not know what file it is, please help.

The apt-get man page mentions a lock file in /var/cache/apt/archives/ & /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/. If you can't find one there, try starting synaptic from a command line and see if it complains about a lock file. It might tell you where it is.
