Need help starting blackbox

Ok, I've got Blackbox installed after having problems with make. I tried creating a .xinitrc file containing 'exec blackbox' (without the quotes) in my /home/nick folder, but GNOME still loads :/. Any ideas? Thanx again.

I'm not sure how Gnome works but it uses gdm for a GUI login, right? You might want to look into that or any Xsession files. Sometimes .xinitrc gets cut out of the loop, so to speak. You might be able to add blackbox to a GUI menu or skip gdm and jump right to .xinitrc and blackbox. I had to do something like that with KDE and kdm and blackbox but, as usual, my memory of the details isn't too good. Hope that points you in a useful direction, anyway. :)

Oh, or you can edit inittab to boot into CLI (runlevel 3) and do startx from there and duck around the whole GUI boot process.

Managed to get it working eventually. Lol, read my mind as that was the next thing I wanted to ask. Which bit of the inittab file do I edit?

id:5:initdefault: - Just change the 5 to a 3?

There's also a bit at the bottom:

# Run xdm in runlevel 5
# xdm is now a separate service
x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon

Thanx again.

Sure thing. That's the line - 5 to 3. And it's probably XDM that was messing you up. The 5 in that line means it will only be executed if you boot into 5 so you can pretty much ignore it.
