need help linux freezes
im not sure how to begin...
but heres my system amd 2500+ barton gigabyte ga7vaxp (via kt400) 256 mb corsair extreme 434mhz @ 333mhz (cuase board didnt support higher when 333 cpu) sil3112 sata Logitech MX700 (wireless usb mouse) western digital raptor 10000rpm sata (WDC WD360GD-00FNA0) seagate ST320413A Nvidia gf4 ti 4800se and have set it up with mdk 10 on sata hd and win2k at the ide hd installation went great. but computer freezes all the time, totally. its mostly when computer is working on somthing it happens, as examle play an mp3 or dowload a file or play a game. but like now atm while i write this, np. its not hard work enough to freeze. i will also add that i have tryed mdk 9.1,9.2,10 suse 9 its only unstable in linux...win2k and xp is no problem. and by the way im running a similar system but diffrent brands in hardware and no sata, mdk 9.1 runs smooth. logs dont tell me anything. it only stats as system suddenly rebooted. well it did...i pressed reset. pls need help to solve this. hmm all this text and no smiley :) and btw warning -----> :newbie: |
Try to load the system with "acpi=off noapic" as kernel parameters. In grub, add it to the kernel line. If you use lilo, it goes on the append= line (and don't forget to rerun /sbin/lilo before rebooting).

I had problems with this pc rebooting at random times. I ran a memory tester program overnight and one of my simms was faulty. replaces that now OK. Also compiling a kernel is a good machine test, if you get signal 15 it is almost certainly hardware related.

ill try run a memtest but its strange i have no problems in win2k. more suggestions? |
Do you have any shared IRQs? Type cat /proc/interrupts to look it up. If you do you may want to set your IRQ configuration to manual in your BIOS.

ok..could be something. it turned out like this
CPU0 0: 48531 XT-PIC timer 1: 440 XT-PIC keyboard 2: 0 XT-PIC cascade 8: 1 XT-PIC rtc 10: 7269 XT-PIC usb-uhci, usb-uhci, usb-uhci, eth0, es1371 11: 36116 XT-PIC ide0, ehci_hcd 14: 48 XT-PIC ide2 15: 6638 XT-PIC ide3 NMI: 0 LOC: 48495 ERR: 5 MIS: 0 ill try at once and see what i can do about it. |
If it proves to be difficult to assign IRQ's you might want to just move around the PCI cards in their slots. The Asus A7V is a classic board with this problem - if you have cards in the second and third slots virtually nothing will work.

ok i will try moving the cards and see cause it was strange in bios.
as default the built in funktions like usb networkcard and raid is shared somehow. i can only set irqs for the pci places...then built in seems to share 1 IRQ |
this was the best settings i could set for as low shares as possible
0: 39376 XT-PIC timer 1: 588 XT-PIC keyboard 2: 0 XT-PIC cascade 4: 22 XT-PIC usb-uhci 7: 485 XT-PIC usb-uhci, eth0 8: 1 XT-PIC rtc 10: 29326 XT-PIC ide0, ehci_hcd 11: 3148 XT-PIC usb-uhci, es1371 14: 48 XT-PIC ide2 15: 5294 XT-PIC ide3 NMI: 0 LOC: 39341 ERR: 4 MIS: 0 oh btw only 2 shared there that is pci is soundcard es1371 and ide0 sata card |
Try adding noapic nolapic to the append= option that you boot from. I know you've tried the noapic thing, but maybe the nolapic will make a difference.

and now my interrupts looks like this CPU0 0: 10915 XT-PIC timer 1: 51 XT-PIC keyboard 2: 0 XT-PIC cascade 4: 932 XT-PIC usb-uhci, es1371 7: 0 XT-PIC usb-uhci 8: 1 XT-PIC rtc 10: 25 XT-PIC usb-uhci, eth0 11: 30484 XT-PIC ide0 14: 1504 XT-PIC ide2 15: 622 XT-PIC ide3 NMI: 0 LOC: 0 ERR: 0 MIS: 0 what can it be thats causing it then? only got memtesting undone so far...seems like it takes long time to do. |
ok after running memtest...it reported 2 errors but they only occured once all next loops were error free. so i didnt belive memory was broken.
i have 3 setting in bios failsafe optimal and topperformance at this time i was running failsafe now i tryed running at optimal setting and error was gone :) then after some serius 8h walltime still no errors. so i booted up and tryed copy q3 pak0.pk3 it worked for the first time i could complete the copy. i guess that did it...now i only got some testing to do and see if it lasts :) |
