Need help installing phpize

I can't seem to find phpize and need help installing it on my server. When I type phpize, I receive the response "command not found".

I'm running Red Hat Fedora Core 6, Apache 2.0, and PHP 5.1.6.

What is the safest way to install phpize? I've read about either using "yum install php-devel" or "yum install php5-devel". I'm confused about whether this is the correct approach and what installing these packages will actually do.

Thanks!
Chris

You seem to expect to be able to find phpize on your system already - how did you install it?

FC6 is about to go legacy if it hasn't already. So you will increasingly have problems as the yum repos stop getting updated and vanish, and the rpms drop out of sight. Unless you like managing source code, you really want to update.

The yum method is the preferred one. The packages contain instructions to install the php and php5 development files. If you have a yum gui (pirut, yumex) you can look the package up and read about it.
