Need help installing inkscape

Hello all,

I'm having trouble installing inkscape for Fedora 16 (64-bit). This is the error I get when running ./configure from working directory inkscape-0.48.2.

configure: error: libgc (the Boehm Conservative Collector) 6.4+, is needed to compile inkscape -- http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Hans_Boehm/gc

I think I have installed libgc in the correct directory, along with many others ;-) but it is still not picking it up.

Code:
[prompt@prompt]$ pwd
/usr/local/lib
[prompt@prompt]$ ls
libgc-6.4 libgc.la libgc.so.1 libpng15.a libpng15.so libpng15.so.15.7.0 libpng.la libz.a libz.so.1 pkgconfig
libgc.a libgc.so libgc.so.1.0.2 libpng15.la libpng15.so.15 libpng.a libpng.so libz.so libz.so.1.2.5
So what gives?

Have you installed the libgc-devel package?
But anyways, why aren't you just using the Inkscape from the repositories?

did you install a DIFFERENT version than WAS installed ? libc is "basically" the operating system

if you changed it from what was installed when you installed fedora
you , in all likelihood, royally messed up the computer

if you did THE ONLY way to fix is to reinstall fedora

Oh wow! Definitely would have installed from the repository if I would have known it was there.

My system still seems to be working fine, but if I have to reinstall for some reason it won't be a big deal since I'm just working with Fedora to learn linux. I don't have any of my personal data stored on the system.

Thanks for the help! I think there are a couple of lessons that I have learned here 1.) check the repositories before trying to compile the source code. 2.) Don't try installing source code if you don't understand what's going on ;-)
