Need help installing games on mandrake9.1
 

I am getting a little frustrated with linux right now, its not the distro's fault its me. I am a newbie to linux with only 3 weeks exp and I need help fast. I recently converted over to Mandrake linux after my Windows Xp pro crashed 7 times in one day. The problem is I am a bigtime online gamer and I want to play my games using linux...Can someone help me?
The games that I have and play are for Windows plattforms only, like 'Half Life', 'Return Castle Wolfenstein' and 'Unreal Tournament'. Is there a way to install these game on my current Linus OS which is Mandrake9.1?
I have been reading a bit about Wine from other forums, but I just cant grasp the basics on how I go about using or even installing the program. Also I have tried to install other games recomended like 'Enemy Territory' RTCW , it is a stand alone game which does not require the retail cd to install. Please if someone can help me it would be most appreciated, especially when now I am debating about going back to Windows....Please stop me from making that mistake.

If you search the boards you will probably find your answer. I know there is an installer for UT, but I do not know about the rest of the games you hve listed.

Winex is a very capable program that allows many Windows games to run seamlessly under Linux. Try looking at transgaming.com - you do have to subscribe to download an RPM package for Mandrake, but it's only $15 for 3 months, so if it suits you, then it will be worth it.

For unreal tournament 2003, mount disc 3, and "cd" to your cdrom drives directory in a terminal, and then type "su -m", then enter your root password. type "ls". There should be something like "ut2003_install.sh" or something like that. Type "./(installname.sh)", and it will launch the install program. When its done installing, type "ut2003" into a console to launch it. Now the disc labels are a little screwed up during the installation, I believe "Play Disc" is number 1, and "Disc 2" is really disk 3, or something like that. Just try the different cds when it asks you to switch until one works. :P


Im not sure about RTCW, but if it has a linux installer, its probobly installed the same way.

Half life is a little complicated to set up, so maybe you should get some more experience before you do that.


For help installing normal programs, theres 1000 threads on it. Just search "compiling from source" or "installing programs" or something like that.
