man tar ... really, it depends on which version you've got
the switches -j and -y are likely.

tar -j winex221.tar.bz2
tar: You must specify one of the `-Acdtrux' options
Try `tar --help' for more information.

Nefarious did you read the man page? The command is:
tar xvzf for tar.gz

tar xvjf for tar.bz2

But you really should read those pages that Tink suggested, it will help you to know what you actually are doing, this helps to remember for future reference, and maybe apply what you have learned to something else you try to accomplish.

Cool

My word ...

I'm sorry I jumped to conclusions when you said
you knew what you were doing with .tar.gz files,
and assumed you were aware of the fact that
the 'z' in 'tar xvzf some.tar.gz' was doing the
decompression of gzip compressed archives,
and would figure out that you might need to
replace that z with either j or y for .bz2 ....

Oh well.

man tar :}

Cheers,
Tink

RED HAT 8.0 GNOME

OK... I extracted WINE and i got my OPEN GL FILE IN its place but when i go to install WINE i get this...

./configure --enable-opengl
loading cache ./config.cache
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH

Someone told me that i needed to install GCC because i didnt have a compiler. So i went to Menu > System Settings > Packages

I went down and i see under development there is development tools which contains GCC... When i click the check mark to update it and then hit update i get an error.... Package Not Found.
krb5-libs = 1.2.5-6 Required by krb5-devel

ANy help would be appreciated... Thanks

you can find an rpm at http://rpmfind.net i think you need this file
ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/8.0/e...3.2-7.i386.rpm and if it needs a dependency, download that rpm from rpmfind.net, and you can always try to force the rpm, sometimes you need to, here is how
rpm -ivh blah.rpm --force

well.... i found GCC-3.2-7.i386.rpm on my red hat 8.0 disk.... but when i go to install it it says its needs to files Kernel-Headers... When i look on the disk for them... They are not there..... so the only way to install GCC which wouldn't work very well any way was to do -i -nodeps install it...........
