Necessary to have sendmail running?

I'm running a webserver and i noticed that sendmail is running in the background - and watching for connections. Is there any reason why on a webserver i'd want to leave this service running?

Sendmail is an MTA. It is useful for sending and recieving e-mail. If you don't need to do that, you don't need it.

MTA = Mail Transfer Agent

Which is a fancy way for saying a program that moves mail from one place to another.
